Artemis, the goddess of the hunt and the moon, is one of the most revered of all ancient Greek deities. She was the daughter of Zeus and the Titan Leto and twin sister of the god Apollo. Her field was the wild, and she was the archer with unerring aim. Artemis soon established herself as the goddess of the hunt.

Immediately after her birth, Artemis helped her mother Leto to give birth to her brother Apollo and rightly earned the title of patron of youth and all living things, goddess of childbirth, purity and virginity. She was the patroness of young children and was known for her ability to cause and relieve illness in women. In literature and art, Artemis was depicted as a hunter carrying a bow and arrow.
